The GMAT Focus Edition — What It Is and What Changed
The majority of GMAT material available online is still for the old GMAT. If you are preparing today, it is essential that you know what the GMAT Focus Edition is. The format, scoring system and types of questions have all been altered and it can make a huge difference to your preparation if you know what to expect.
What the GMAT Focus Edition is actually testing
The GMAT Focus Edition assesses the abilities that business schools look for in MBA candidates. Quant tests how well you can use numbers and logic to solve problems. Verbal is the ability to comprehend and assess arguments in complex texts. The new section, Data Insights, assesses your ability to analyse information from several sources quickly.
What it doesn't test is just as important. The GMAT is not a test of general knowledge, memorisation or previous business and finance knowledge. Students who are preparing for an exam such as CAT or JEE are often shocked by the difference in the reasoning requirements.
What changed in the Focus Edition
There are still a lot of GMAT resources available online that describe the old version of the GMAT. The Focus Edition is shorter, about 2 hours and 15 minutes, and has some important changes. The Analytical Writing Assessment has been eliminated and the new Data Insights section has replaced Integrated Reasoning.
Now, only Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency are tested and geometry is not tested directly in Quant. Verbal has been eliminated and replaced with only Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension. If you are studying material that was created prior to 2023, you are probably studying for an old exam.
Who takes the GMAT and why
The GMAT is mainly taken by professionals and graduates applying for MBA and business master's programmes worldwide. GMAT scores are taken into account during admissions by leading schools such as Indian School of Business, Indian Institutes of Management, London Business School, INSEAD, Harvard Business School, The Wharton School, and Chicago Booth School of Business.
A While a high GMAT score does not ensure admission, a low GMAT score can restrict your choices even if your overall application is strong.
Test centre or online — which is better?
The GMAT Focus Edition is the same for online and test centre takers. The questions, scoring and difficulty are the same. The online exam is live proctored, meaning you will need a quiet room, a reliable internet connection and a computer that meets GMAC's requirements.
Some students like to sit the exam at home, others do better in a test centre. Both are equally good. Select the one that you feel most comfortable in and can do your best in.

Preparing The Right way with Experts on the GMAT Focus Edition
The GMAT isn't an exam you can prepare for by simply memorising concepts or revising formulas. It assesses your ability to think clearly in stressful situations, use time effectively and make accurate decisions. Those skills require practice, not cramming. The key to the difference between an average score and a great one is to prepare the right way from the beginning.
The Quant Section Is More Reasoning Than Calculation
The Focus Edition has revolutionized the way Quant is tested. It no longer includes any geometry topics, but is all about Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency. The key to success is not to memorize formulas, but to think logically. The section is often difficult for students with good maths skills when they are timed.
Data Insights Needs Dedicated Preparation
One of the most significant changes in the GMAT Focus Edition is Data Insights. It includes Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, and Two-Part Analysis in one section. It demands a different strategy and students who do not study it independently tend to perform less well than they might.
GMAT Verbal Is Different from Everyday English
Being comfortable with English isn't enough for the GMAT. Critical Reasoning is a test that assesses your ability to detect assumptions, analyze arguments, and select the most reasonable answer. Reading Comprehension passages are dense and many of the answer choices are distracters. Structured reasoning is the key to success, not language skills.
Time Management Is a Skill You Need to Build
You will have approximately 45 minutes per section, and time can fly by if you spend too much time on a challenging question. Knowing when to move on, when to make an educated guess, and how to pace yourself throughout the entire section is an important aspect of GMAT preparation.
Your GMAT Score Matters More Than You Think
The GMAT is used to compare applicants from different academic and professional backgrounds at business schools. Average GMAT scores also factor into business school rankings, so admissions committees take them into consideration. A competitive score can help bolster your application, and a lower score can hurt your chances at highly selective programs.
Breaking a Score Plateau Requires the Right Strategy
Most students don't stop improving because they've reached their limit. Typically, they make the same errors in Quant, Verbal or Data Insights and do not see the pattern. It is not enough to take more mock tests. The key to real improvement is to know your weak points and work on them.
Learn From Experienced GMAT Trainers
Our GMAT trainers at ScoreGetter emphasize on imparting good concepts, intelligent test strategies and confidence to the students to score high. The trainers lead students through each section of the GMAT Focus Edition in a clear and organized manner, equipping them with personalized mentoring, new GMAT Focus Edition training, and intensive practice sessions.
Students will learn practical techniques, analysis of mock test, and individual attention to boost accuracy, speed, and overall performance in all sections of the test – Quant, Verbal, and Data Insights.
Mentors
At ScoreGetter your teachers are your mentors who will work with you right from the beginning till the exam day and help you in identifying your weak areas and strengthen them and this will improve your score as this process plays a vital role in achieving your dream score.
Should You Take the GMAT or the GRE for Business School?
Most MBA programs now accept both. The question isn't which one is better — it's which one plays to your strengths. And the only reliable way to find out is to take a diagnostic for both before committing weeks of prep to either one.
How to Register for the GMAT — What You Need to Know Before You Book
Start by creating a free account on mba.com. Ensure that your name is the same on your passport. A slight variation in names can be an issue on test day, so use your legal name as it is on your ID.
Create an Account on mba.com
Go to mba.com and create a free account. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your passport — the name on your account must match your ID on test day. This is non-negotiable and mismatches cause real problems.
Choose Test Centre or Online
SThe GMAT exam can be taken at a test centre or online. Pearson VUE has authorised test centres throughout Chennai for students. For the online exam, you must have a quiet room, a reliable internet connection, and a computer that meets the technical requirements. The exam, scoring and difficulty are identical in both formats.
Pick Your Date and Time Slot
The GMAT is administered year-round, so you can take it when it works best for you. No specific test windows. Popular evening and weekend times can get booked up fast, so if you have a preferred time, it's best to book early.
Choose Your Section Order
The GMAT Focus Edition allows you to choose the order of the three sections prior to the start of the test. Some students like to begin with the easiest part, but it will depend on your test-taking approach.
Pay and Confirm
The regular GMAT Focus Edition exam fee is $275. Once your payment is complete, you'll receive a confirmation email with your appointment details. Save this email, you will need it on test day.
Test Day — Arrive Early, Passport Required
Bring your passport and booking confirmation and be at the test centre at least 30 minutes before the exam. Late arrivals are usually not allowed. The official GMAT score is usually reported within 3-5 business days after the test.
📌 Booking Tips from ScoreGetter
- Book your test date as soon as you have a clear sense of your application timeline — evening and weekend slots at Chennai centres fill faster than most students expect
- Leave room for a potential retake. If your first test is within 16 days of an application deadline, you won't have time for a retake before submitting
- GMAC's Enhanced Score Report is worth purchasing — it gives you section-level performance data that helps diagnose what to target in a retake
- Score Select lets you choose which attempts to send to each school. You can send any or all of your attempts — schools only see what you submit, not what you withhold
- Check your specific target school's score policy before selecting which attempts to send — a small number of programs require all scores
- Your name on mba.com must match your passport exactly. Check this before paying — fixing a name mismatch after booking is a paperwork headache
